Those traveling along the way will gesture with their hands at you and will speak contemptuously, leaving their heads bared regarding the daughter of Jerusalem. This reaction highlights the sorrowful transformation that has taken place. The Prophet expresses their derision by asking, “Is this city a crown of glory, a stunning beauty, the joy of all the earth?” He affirms that all of this came to pass according to Divine foreknowledge.

Furthermore, he recounts the words of those who, filled with malice, revel in the misfortunes that have struck them: “But we see, we will find, we shall behold this day.” This corresponds with what the blessed David prophesied, stating, “We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and a derision to those around us” (Psalms 78:4), and again, “You have made us a taunt among the nations, a byword among the peoples” (Psalms 43:15). The Prophet, embodying the city and its walls, calls upon them to weep day and night because of the myriad afflictions they suffer.
