Lamentations 2:22Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

Thau. Thou hast called as to a festival, those that should terrify me round about, and there was none in the day of the wrath of the Lord that escaped and was left: those that I brought up, and nourished, my enemy hath consumed them.

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

‘You summoned me on the day of the feast, when I entered the vicinity, and there was neither survivor nor remnant on the day of the Lord's fury.’ In their dread of enemy invasion, they sought refuge in Jerusalem as if it were a stronghold; however, there they were all taken captive. It was customary for everyone to gather there during the feasts, which is why the Prophet also compared their captivity to a celebration. I have raised up, ‘I have made it possible,’ and ‘I have increased abundantly;’ yet the adversary has brought it all to an end, meaning my efforts have been in vain, for he has taken all my offspring. Thus, the Prophet concluded his second lamentation.
