Lord, you undoubtedly knew him by name as you foresaw both his role and your encounter with him. By choosing not to mention his name, you affirm his status as unknown; there was no prior arrangement based on a specific name, just the physical indication of his presence. Mark mentions that this man carried a vessel of water, though the Evangelists describe different types of containers; one refers to an amphora, while another describes a vessel with a more slender neck.
The disciples are instructed to follow him. Why is he called the master of the house? This title reflects his devotion, not his wealth. Why is the room designated in the upper chamber? It symbolizes the high dignity of the master, who prepared a place where the Lord and His disciples could find rest and enjoy the fullness of his virtues. Oh, if only I had the chance to carry a jug of water! Just like this master who readied an expansive room in the upper chambers! What does a jug represent if not a perfect vessel, one that holds much? Concerning it, the Lord said: "They will pour into your lap a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over."
What can be said of water? Reflect on it: in Genesis, just before the creation of the world, the Holy Spirit hovered over the waters. Oh water, you cleansed the earth soaked in human blood, and you symbolize the present cleansing! Oh water, you are honored to serve as the sacrament of Christ, washing everything while remaining pure yourself. You are the first and most complete of the sacraments. Through you begins everything, and through you, we are granted eternal life. You preserve raw meat from decay and, when mixed with salt, you prevent spoiled flesh from rotting for ages. You are the lifeblood for creatures suffering from heat. You are sweet, nourishing, life-giving, and delightful to the palate. You granted a name to the prophets and apostles; you bestowed a name upon the Savior. The prophets are likened to clouds from heaven, the apostles are the salt of the earth, and the Savior is the Source of life.
The mountains may press down upon you, but you remain unbroken; you carve pathways through rocks but do not shatter. You overflow upon the earth without ever running dry. You surge forth from below the earth, bringing life and fertility through your torrents, ensuring the earth does not suffer from drought and yields its harvest at the proper time. You are composed of all elements, born of the sky, air, sea, and earth. You poured forth from the rock at the strike of the prophetic staff to nourish the hearts of parched nations. When you flowed from the Savior's side, you were witnessed by those who executed Him and inspired belief. You, along with blood and spirit, stand as one of the three witnesses to our rebirth, as it states: "There are three that bear witness: the water, the blood, and the spirit." Water purifies, blood redeems, and spirit renews.
