The Church Fathers on this verse

4 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Theophylact of Bulgaria

11th centuryChurch Father

The fact that not only was a vast crowd nourished, but that there were also leftovers, illustrates the extraordinary power of Christ. While Moses provided manna, it was given solely to meet each individual's needs, and whatever remained would rot. Similarly, Elijah, when he aided a needy widow, offered just enough to sustain her. In stark contrast, Jesus, as the Sovereign, produces an abundance. This reflects historical truth. Symbolically, the five loaves represent the five books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The two fish signify the teachings of the apostles and the Gospel. The five thousand people represent our five senses. However, we are unable to consume everything that is available; much remains plentiful, which only the apostles can carry. Therefore, we, who remain bound to our five senses, struggle to grasp the more profound elements of the Law and the Gospel, which only the apostles are equipped to understand.

Alexander Gorsky

The Lord showed deep mercy: with just five loaves and two fish, He miraculously provided for five thousand listeners, demonstrating His abundant generosity. Each apostle gathered a basketful of leftovers, reminiscent of the manna provided in the wilderness and other divine wonders from the Old Testament. The crowd, filled with awe at this astonishing miracle, recognized Him as the prophet foretold by Moses and sought to make Jesus their king. However, He retreated to the mountain to pray, instructing His disciples to return to the opposite shore without Him. As a result, the people were left without the fulfillment of their longing.

Each of the four Gospel writers confirms that everyone present, which was significantly more than five thousand individuals, consumed the food and were completely satisfied (Matt. 14:20; Luke 9:17; John 6:11-12). Additionally, the Gospel of John notes that the disciples of Jesus provided an abundance of bread and fish to those who were seated, giving them as much as they desired.

Lopuchin A.P.

19th centuryCommentator

The Savior, positioned among His guests and filled with joy for the merciful act He was about to perform, raised His eyes toward heaven and expressed His gratitude. He blessed the loaves, broke them into pieces, and entrusted them to His disciples to share with the multitude; He also apportioned two fish for everyone. It was a simple yet ample meal, and for the weary seekers, it was truly a delightful feast.
