Theophylact of Bulgaria

He accordingly admonishes them for their lack of comprehension regarding the strength of Christ, through which the Lord can create bread from nothing.

As he was preparing to leave, he spoke to his disciples regarding their inquiry in a veiled manner, cautioning them against the teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees, highlighting their doctrines and duplicity (Mt. 16:12; Mk. 8:15; Lk. 12:1).

Following a confrontation with the Pharisees and Sadducees in the region of Dalmanutha and Magdala, Christ journeys back across the sea to the eastern shore, avoiding the schemes of His adversaries. Once on the other side, He addresses His disciples, cautioning them: “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees” (Mt. 16:6), “of the Pharisees and Herod” (Mk. 8:15), and “of the hypocrisy of the Pharisees” (Lk. 12:1), as well as the secular thinking and materialism of the Sadducees, alongside the prioritization of political gains over spiritual values typical of the Herodians. The disciples had overlooked their provisions, noting that “except one loaf they had not bread with them in the boat” (Mk. 8:14).

This oversight caused them concern, and upon Christ's warning about the leaven of these groups, they mistakenly thought He was advising them to be cautious in acquiring bread, fearing they might purchase it from the Pharisees, Sadducees, or Herodians, individuals recognized as His opponents. With a heavy heart, the Lord began to admonish His followers for their lack of understanding: “Are your hearts still hardened, and your eyes do not see, and your ears do not hear?” (Mk. 8:17-18). Had they not witnessed the miraculous feeding of thousands with only a few loaves? How could they fail to comprehend this?

Gladkow B.I.

19th centuryCommentator

"Do you believe that I, who provided sustenance for five thousand individuals with just five loaves and for four thousand with seven loaves, would be unable to do the same for you, my twelve followers? Why is it that, though you have eyes, you do not perceive? And though you have ears, you do not hear? Why do you fail to recall the miracles that have unfolded right before you? Do you still lack understanding of everything that is occurring around you? Has your heart become as hard as stone? Do you not realize that when I warned you to 'beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees,' I was not referring to bread? It was then that the Apostles recognized that Jesus was cautioning them against the peril of the teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

Paul Matwejewski

19th centuryCommentator

After leaving behind the spiritually ‘incurable’ hypocrites, Jesus Christ boarded a boat and journeyed across the Sea of Galilee. The disciples, having neglected to bring sufficient provisions, had only one loaf of bread in the boat with them. Jesus then cautioned them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees, and Herod's leaven,” as recorded by the holy evangelist Mark. He warned them about the toxic influences of the Pharisees’ misguided teachings, the skepticism of the Sadducees, and the moral corruption of the Herodians, all of which served as harmful leaven against which He sought to protect His earnest followers.

Misinterpreting the Lord’s warning, the disciples thought He was advising them against eating bread sourced from the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herodians to avoid becoming unclean. Since they had only one loaf, they saw His remarks as a rebuke of their own neglect and carelessness, expressing among themselves, “We have no bread.”

However, knowing their thoughts, the Lord confronted them for their lack of reason and faith, remarking that they had shown foolishness by forgetting how He had fed the multitudes with a mere handful of loaves, and their unbelief by doubting His ability to provide for them even without purchased bread. “What are you thinking among yourselves, O ye of little faith? Do you not sense, perceive, or comprehend? Is your heart still hardened? Do you have eyes but do not see, and ears but do not hear? Do you not remember?” He asked. “When I broke five loaves to feed five thousand, how many baskets of fragments did you gather?” They replied, “Twenty.” “And when I broke seven loaves to feed four thousand, how many baskets of fragments did you collect?” They answered, “Seven.”

“Why do you not grasp that I was not speaking of bread, but of the leaven of the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herodians?” It then dawned on the witnesses of the miraculous multiplication that, in the presence of their Master, their concern should not have been with mere physical sustenance. The warning was meant to guide them away from the deceptive teachings of the religious leaders rather than concern over bread.
