Theophylact of Bulgaria
He appropriately admonishes them for their lack of comprehension regarding the power of Christ, through which the Lord can create bread from nothing.
Having eyes, see you not? And having ears, hear you not? Neither do you remember?
οφθαλμους εχοντες ου βλεπετε και ωτα εχοντες ουκ ακουετε και ου μνημονευετε

He appropriately admonishes them for their lack of comprehension regarding the power of Christ, through which the Lord can create bread from nothing.
As he was preparing to leave, he spoke to his disciples in a mysterious manner concerning their inquiry: take heed of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees, referring to their teachings and their hypocrisy (Mt. 16:12; Mk. 8:15; Lk. 12:1).
Following a confrontation with the Pharisees and Sadducees near Dalmanuf and Magdala, Christ traverses back to the opposite shore of the sea, specifically the eastern side, seeking to avoid the hostility of His adversaries. Upon reaching this new location, He cautions His disciples: ‘Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees’ (Mt. 16:6) and ‘of the Pharisees and Herod’ (Mk. 8:15), as well as the hypocrisy prevalent among the Pharisees (Lk. 12:1) and the worldly mindset of the Sadducees, along with the Herodians’ tendency to prioritize political motives over spiritual truths. Meanwhile, the disciples had neglected to bring sufficient bread, possessing only a single loaf among them as they traveled by boat (Mk. 8:14).
Their forgetfulness caused them concern, and when Christ warned them against the leaven of the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herodians, they mistakenly interpreted His words as a caution regarding the procurement of bread, thinking He meant to avoid purchasing from these groups. With a heavy heart, the Lord began to address His disciples for their lack of understanding: ‘Are your hearts still hardened? Do you not see, and do you not hear?’ (Mk. 8:17). Had they not witnessed His miraculous feeding of thousands with just a handful of loaves? How could they fail to comprehend His message?
“Do you really believe that I, who provided sustenance for five thousand individuals with just five loaves and for four thousand with seven loaves, would be unable to do the same for you, my twelve apostles? Why is it that you have eyes yet fail to see? Why is it that you have ears yet do not hear? Do you not recall what has transpired before your very eyes? Are you still struggling to grasp what is unfolding around you? Has your heart become as hardened as stone? How can you not realize that my reference to leaven was not about actual bread when I cautioned you to 'Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees'? It was then that only the Apostles grasped that Jesus was warning them about the peril posed by the teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
Though you have eyes, you fail to perceive the significance of the occurrences unfolding around you. The one who sustained countless individuals with merely a few loaves and fish surely has the ability to provide for the twelve disciples with a single loaf, does he not? It was then that the disciples understood that he was not referring to bread. (Matthew 16:12)
After leaving the spiritually ‘incurable’ hypocrites behind, Jesus Christ reboarded the boat and made his way across the Sea of Galilee. The disciples, having neglected to bring provisions, found that they had only a small amount of bread with them. As this transpired, Jesus warned them, saying, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees, and Herod’s leaven,” as noted by the evangelist Mark. He cautioned them about the corrupt teachings and superstitions of the Pharisees, the disbelief of the Sadducees, the moral corruption of the Herodians, and the depraved lifestyles of all these groups, which served as dangerous influences to his trusting disciples.
Misunderstanding the Lord's words, they assumed he was cautioning them against consuming bread associated with the Pharisees and Sadducees, believing it to be unclean. They perceived his warning as a reflection on their own oversight, saying among themselves, “We did not bring bread.” However, the Lord, aware of their concerns, reproached them for their lack of reason and faith. As Blessed Theophylact comments, they demonstrated their foolishness by forgetting how he had miraculously fed numerous people with a few loaves, as well as their disbelief that he could sustain them despite not having brought bread from the Jews. “Why are you contemplating among yourselves, O ye of little faith, about not having loaves? Do you not sense, do you not perceive, do you still have a hardened heart? Do you not see with your eyes, and do you not hear with your ears, and do you not remember? When I broke five loaves for five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you gather?” They replied, “Twenty.” “And when I broke seven loaves for four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you gather?” They answered, “Seven.” “How is it that you do not comprehend that I was not speaking to you about bread, but about the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees and Herodians?” In this moment, those who witnessed the miraculous feeding realized that in the presence of their Master, they should have worried less about physical sustenance and understood that he was warning them against the teachings propagated by the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herodians.
