Theophylact of Bulgaria

11th centuryChurch Father

He appropriately admonishes them for lacking comprehension of Christ’s power, through which the Lord can create bread from nothing.

As he was preparing to leave, Jesus addressed his followers in response to their inquiry with a cautionary message: be mindful of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees, alluding to their teachings and insincerity (Mt. 16:12; Mk. 8:15; Lk. 12:1).

Following a confrontation with the Pharisees and Sadducees in the vicinity of Dalmanuf and Magdala, Christ once again journeys across the sea, specifically to its eastern shore, in order to escape the hostility of His adversaries. Upon reaching this side, He cautions His disciples: ‘Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees’ (Mt. 6) and ‘of the Pharisees and Herod’ (Mk. 18), warning them about the hypocrisy of the Pharisees (Lk. 12:1), the materialism and secularism of the Sadducees, as well as the Herodians' tendency to prioritize political ambitions over spiritual matters. The disciples, having forgotten to bring sufficient bread—‘and except one loaf they had not bread with them in the boat’ (Mark 14)—were troubled by this oversight.

When Christ admonished them regarding the leaven of these groups, they mistakenly thought He was advising them to be cautious in purchasing bread from the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herodians, suggesting that they should avoid associating with these factions, regarded as His enemies. With a heavy heart, the Lord began to admonish His disciples for their lack of understanding: ‘Are your hearts still hardened, and your eyes do not see, and your ears do not hear?’ (Mk. 17 and 18). Were they not witnesses to His miraculous provision for thousands with just five to seven loaves? How could they possibly fail to comprehend His message?

Gladkow B.I.

"Do you not believe that I, who provided sustenance for five thousand individuals with five loaves and four thousand with seven loaves, can also provide for you, my twelve disciples? Why do you fail to see with your eyes? Why do you not hear with your ears? Why do you not recall the miracles you have witnessed? Do you still not grasp all that is unfolding around you? Has your heart hardened like stone? How is it that you do not realize I was not referring to bread when I cautioned you to 'Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees'? It was only then that the Apostles recognized Jesus was alerting them to the perilous teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

Paul Matwejewski

19th centuryCommentator

After leaving behind the spiritually 'incurable' hypocrites, Jesus Christ reboarded the boat and journeyed to the opposite shore of the Sea of Galilee. The disciples, having neglected to bring provisions, found themselves with only a single loaf of bread. In this moment, Jesus warned them, saying, "Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees, and Herod's leaven," as noted by the holy evangelist Mark. This leaven represented the toxic teachings and superstitions of the Pharisees, the disbelief of the Sadducees, the moral corruption of the Herodians, and the sinful lifestyles of all involved, all of which posed a serious threat to the faith of his unsuspecting disciples.

Misunderstanding the Lord's admonition, the disciples believed he was cautioning them against consuming bread from the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herodians for fear of contamination. Recognizing they had only one loaf, they assumed this was a veiled reference to their oversight and negligence, thinking among themselves, "We have not brought bread." However, understanding their inner thoughts, the Lord rebuked them for their lack of reason and faith. As Blessed Theophylact explains, they displayed foolishness for forgetting how He had previously fed thousands with minimal loaves, and they exhibited disbelief by doubting His ability to provide for them even without purchasing bread from the Jews. He questioned them, asking, "What are you discussing in your hearts, O you of little faith, that you would fear the lack of loaves? Do you not understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you not see with your eyes or hear with your ears? Do you not remember how many baskets you gathered when I broke five loaves for five thousand men?" They replied, "Twenty." "And how many baskets did you collect when I broke seven for four thousand?" They answered, "Seven." "Why do you not comprehend that I was speaking not of bread, but of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees and Herodians?" It finally dawned on the disciples, witnesses to the miraculous multiplication of the loaves, that, in proximity to their Master, their focus should be less on physical bread and more on the spiritual dangers posed by the teachings of the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herodians.
