A man approached Jesus and accused His disciples of being unable to heal his son. In response, Christ redirected the blame back to him, implying, "You lack faith, and thus bear responsibility for your son's condition." However, Jesus' remarks were not limited to this individual but were aimed at all of the Jewish people, calling them out for their disbelief. Many who were present might have felt tempted by this situation as well. When Jesus stated, "as long as I am with you," He indicated that death was something He longed for, almost as if He were expressing, "It pains Me to remain among you, who lack faith." Yet, He did not merely stop at the reprimand; He also offered healing, demonstrating in the boy's restoration not arrogance but profound humility.

But the Lord addressed not only him but all present, declaring, "O faithless generation! How long shall I be with you, and how long must I endure you?" It appears that, due to the Disciples' inability to expel the demon, the bystanding Jews took this as an opportunity for grievous blasphemy; considering that even with miracles occurring, they continued to speak ill, one can only imagine the things they said under such circumstances. Thus, the Lord, observing their complaints, entirely refuted and humbled them, employing not only stern words but also actions and expressions filled with compassion. In saying this, He further instructed, "Bring Him to Me," and they brought him.

Upon hearing this, the Lord directed His focus to the source of this helplessness and the agents of confusion and temptation, delivering a resolute admonition: O faithless and corrupt generation, as long as I am among you, I will endure you. Each individual recognized to whom this rebuke was directed. The Lord's phrase, O faithless and corrupt generation, should not be limited to the apostles; it indeed applies more to the scribes and those from the populace who were influenced by them, including the father of this afflicted man to some extent. Mark records that the Lord reproached the apostles for their failure to pray and fast, and prior to this, there are no strong denunciations aimed at the apostles in public.

In contrast, the phrase O faithless and corrupt generation, was used repeatedly regarding the scribes and Pharisees (Matthew 11:15). Had the expression "faithless generation" related solely to the apostles, they would not have questioned why they were unable to cast out the spirit.

The Apostles' failure was partially attributed to the doubt expressed by the father of the demon-possessed boy, prompting Jesus to exclaim: "O unbelievers! How many miracles have been performed among you by my disciples in my name! And you still persist in your unbelief! How long must I be with you and bear your demands for more and more signs before you finally believe?" This expression does not stem from reproach or anger; rather, it reflects Jesus' sorrow over the disbelief fostered by the Pharisees among the people. As compassionate and loving as ever, Jesus instructed that the afflicted man be brought to him.
