Because you have deceitfully administered falsehood to the people, leading them into a state of confusion and indulgence, while falsely assuring them of peace, you have rendered them vulnerable to the destruction of conflict. Therefore, justly shall night and darkness envelop you, even as you claim to possess insight and strive to predict accurately. The sun shall set upon you, and the very radiance of day shall be turned into gloom. This does not imply that the physical sun indeed withdraws its rays from you, nor that dawn's light is truly extinguished.

Rather, the magnitude of your calamity represents a profound darkness, a night that is impenetrable, akin to the withdrawal of the sun's brightness and the concealment of light; for severe and extraordinary misfortunes bewilder the mind, unsettle the heart, and enshroud it in darkness.

It may rightly be observed that the spiritual light has also been obscured for the Jewish people who acted defiantly against Christ, as God does not shine upon them, leaving them devoid of spiritual illumination. It is akin to being enveloped in the night of sin, as it is written, "they were blinded," for as Paul states, "when Moses is read, a veil is laid over their heart" (2 Cor. 3:14-15); "when they claim wisdom, they become foolish, and their foolish hearts are darkened" (Rom. 1:21-22). Christ predicted this consequence, urging, "Wherefore ye have light, walk in the light, that ye may be sons of light" (John 12:36). However, in rejecting the divine light, that is, Christ, they find themselves shrouded in darkness, with "the night filled with visions," as the prophet proclaimed.

A similar fate awaits the purveyors of heresies, who, under the guise of insight and while attempting to grasp the mystery of Christ, propagate falsehoods and the detrimental effects of their delusions, much like droplets tainting the hearts of the unsuspecting, thereby steering them away from the doctrines of truth. Hence, "night and darkness shall be upon them from the vision," and they shall be cast into obscurity, having sinned against their fellow believers and crushing the delicate consciences of those for whom Christ sacrificed Himself (1 Cor. 8:12-13).

The sun has set (Jer. 15:9) upon the prophets who misled their people. Consequently, instead of receiving vision, you will experience night, and instead of prophecy, you will find darkness (Micah 3:6). When an unclean spirit departs from an individual, it roams through arid regions (Matt. 12:43), following its own nature. The Lord remarked about this populace, “So shall it be with this wicked generation” (Matt. 12:45). In other words, during the era of the prophets, a malevolent spirit was cast out from among them, a spirit that bore sin.

Those who have devoured the flesh of my people and have stripped their skins will cry out to the Lord, but He will not respond to them (Micah 3:3-4). The prophet refers to the officials and leaders among the people. Just as they seized the wealth of the people and turned a deaf ear to the pleas of the oppressed, showing neglect to the cries of the impoverished who sought their compassion, so too, when they cry out to the Lord in their tribulation, they will find no response from Him.

“Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who flatter My people, who gnash their teeth and proclaim peace. Those who are given something to eat will declare peace, but to those who provide nothing, they will proclaim conflict” (Micah 3:5). The prophet condemns the evil of these false prophets, who, under the guise of true prophecy, claimed to be servants of the Lord filled with His Spirit. They labeled anyone who did not favor them or support them as a despiser of God's messengers, issuing dire warnings filled with fear.

From this, we understand that within Israel, there were indeed false prophets who, motivated by personal gain, declared a peace that was not divinely bestowed. If anyone refrained from offering gifts, they would invoke the impending wrath of God upon that person, regardless of his holiness. Therefore, it is rightly said of them that they utter falsehoods, and their proclamations do not constitute authentic prophecy but rather misleading predictions; they will dwell in darkness and deception. When their forecasts inevitably unravel in a manner contrary to their claims, they will be engulfed in shame, for, as it is stated, there has not been a response from God. The evil spirits will not possess the authority to deceive them with their lies.

The oracles shall descend into silence; the unclean spirit will be hushed and will not dare to mock.

This discussion centers on false prophets. Following this, the prophet turns the focus to himself, stating: while the false prophets speak deceitfully and are engulfed in confusion, I deliver messages in accordance with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, proclaiming the truth of the Lord and the power inherent in that truth. When the false prophets bear their teeth and preach peace, I fearlessly declare Jacob’s transgression and Israel’s sin, because they either venerated idols instead of honoring God or crucified the Son of God. Moreover, if we consider what is articulated in the translation of the Seventy regarding heretics, who are indeed false prophets, claiming that the Lord has stated He did not send them, we will not misstep. Heretics occasionally lead astray the people of God, consuming their very souls through flattery or by accepting gifts, all while secretly aiming to ruin them. They assure peace and a place in the Kingdom of Heaven, discarding the necessity of living soberly and righteously: merely possess the faith we preach, they say, and you will inherit all that God promises. In doing this, they incite the wrath of God against humanity and prepare for conflict with them.

Therefore, O heretics, who have deluded yourselves into believing you possess the prophetic gift and mimic the Church of God! The darkness of night will envelop where you perceive visions, and an unclean spirit shall speak amidst your supposed prophetic declarations. The light of truth shall be concealed from the prophets of this generation, leading them into darkness and confusion. When they are recognized as charlatans rather than true prophets, they will be mocked for their deceptive dreams, and the nations previously misled by them will turn against them. Even the teachers will seek to repent, but their appeals will fall on deaf ears—save for me, the one they have scorned; and because I am compassionate and desire not the death of the sinner (Ezek. 18:32), but rather that he may repent and live, upon hearing them, I will bestow upon them the power of My Spirit, filling them with truth and strength. Those who once misled the people through flattery will thereafter terrify them by declaring the truth and guiding them back to righteousness, and those who caused the errors will begin to mend the wounds they inflicted, leading to restoration.

It is important to note that after sin, a repentant individual is capable of teaching others, provided they cleanse their former transgressions through genuine repentance. Thus, David, after his fall into adultery and murder, proclaims, "Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow." He rejoices not only in his purity but also in his restoration, adding, "Restore to me the joy of Thy salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit;" and when you have done this, I will teach the transgressors your ways, and sinners shall turn unto Thee (Ps. 50).

When the truth is revealed, contrasting the world they have proclaimed, battles will unfold. Those who have predicted falsehood will be ridiculed, and those who have encouraged reliance on illusions will feel a deep sense of shame. They will dwell in shadows even during daylight, honoring the night while being gripped by fear of what they witness. Those who have fallen victim to their deceptions will cast numerous curses upon them.
