Nehemiah examines the various sections of the devastated city, reflecting on how each area may be restored. Similarly, spiritual leaders should often rise in the quiet hours of the night, evaluating the condition of the holy Church while others sleep. This vigilance enables them to discern how all that has been marred by the struggles of sin can be cleansed and renewed. The walls of Jerusalem lie in ruins, and the spiritual lives of believers are tainted by earthly desires. The gates have been consumed by fire, as those who should guide others toward life through teaching have succumbed to forgetfulness of the truth, becoming ensnared by the ephemeral.
