And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me, and I told not any man what God had put in my heart to do in Jerusalem, and there was no beast with me, but the beast that I rode upon.

Nehemiah surveys the different sections of the devastated city, examining each one thoughtfully to consider how restoration might be achieved. Similarly, spiritual leaders ought to rise at night and reflect on the condition of the holy Church while others are asleep, diligently seeking ways to restore what has been corrupted or marred by the struggles with sin through purification. The walls of Jerusalem lie in ruins, and the lives of the faithful are tainted by worldly and base desires. The gateways are consumed by flames, as even those who are meant to guide others to eternal life through their teachings are tainted by ignorance, becoming ensnared by fleeting worldly pursuits.
