Numbers 18:19Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

All the firstfruits of the sanctuary which the children of Israel offer to the Lord, I have given to thee and to thy sons and daughters, by a perpetual ordinance. It is a covenant of salt for ever before the Lord, to thee and to thy sons.

In addition, it is stated that “the covenant of the salt of the everlasting is before the Lord, to thee, and to thy seed after thee.” He instructed that all should adhere closely to what He has affirmed elsewhere, emphasizing that there must be no absence of “the salt of the covenant of the Lord from your sacrifices: in every gift of yours shall ye offer salt unto the Lord your God” (Lev. 2:13). The act of sprinkling salt on the sacrifice symbolizes our need to wisely dedicate ourselves to God, creating a most favorable approach to Him, for “Ye eat the tasteless without salt,” as it is written (Job 6:6). Furthermore, Christ proclaimed to the holy Apostles, “Ye are the salt of the earth” (Matt. 5:13).
