Theodoret of Cyrus

Balaam prophesied the triumph of the Macedonians over the Persians. He states, "They shall emerge from the grasp of the Cithians and shall distress Assur and provoke the Hebrews." Alexander vanquished the Persian empire; however, Antiochus, in his aggression toward the Jews, seized their capital and brought ruin to God's temple.

Based on the Holy Scriptures, the term Kittim may broadly refer to the lands and islands located to the west of the promised land, specifically including Italy, Greece, and Macedonia (Gen. 10:4, Ezek. 27:6, 1 Mac. 1:1). “Ships shall come from Kittim and shall humble Asur.” This prophecy indeed came to pass when Alexander the Great triumphed over the Persians, who had replaced the Assyrians in the annals of history. “And they shall humble Eber.” By the conclusion of the Old Testament era, the Jewish people became subject to Roman governance, and in the first century A.D., even the capital of Judah was ravaged by Emperor Titus, resulting in the dispersion of the Jewish people across the globe.

“But also to them (the Kittymenians) perdition.” Subsequently, the Greco-Roman Empire itself succumbed to invasions by barbarian tribes, and the culture of Greco-Roman scholarship was eclipsed by the fervent proclamation of the Gospel. Ultimately, Christianity spread throughout the entire world.
