The Church Fathers on this verse

Numbers 27:3Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

Our father died in the desert, and was not in the sedition, that was raised against the Lord under Core, but he died in his own sin: and he had no male children. Why is his name taken away out of his family, because he had no son? Give us a possession among the kinsmen of our father.

The daughters of Zelophehad asserted that their father was not among the five who defied the Lord and provoked Him with their offenses, but rather he “died in the wilderness for his sin,” like the six hundred thousand Israelites, and he was neither consumed by fire nor descended into the grave alive.
