The Church Fathers on this verse

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

While one enjoys happiness and wealth, he finds himself surrounded by numerous companions. However, when adversity strikes and he becomes destitute, all abandon him, for true wealth lies in wisdom and the reverence of God. Even a king's greatness is measured by the size of his followers, and he must embody patience, gentleness, and humility towards the less fortunate. His wisdom and righteousness elevate his people, and he bestows his favor only upon his loyal servants, particularly those who possess meekness, which is also commendable in the eyes of God.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

The unrighteous will bow before the virtuous, and they will find themselves serving at the threshold of the just. It is a quality of the unrighteous to scorn and mistreat the just, who endure considerable tribulation from them. However, in accordance with divine justice, the wrongdoers and oppressors of the righteous inevitably face destitution and disgrace, leading to a transformation in their demeanor towards the just. They will kneel to implore favor from those they once disdained and dishonored, aspiring to the dignity of serving at their entrance, yearning to become their gatekeepers.
