2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

The insightful individual recognizes that their well-being hinges on acting rightly, leading to the prosperity of their household; conversely, the unrighteous one is misled by an illusion of joy, ultimately crafting their own downfall.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

A person with a sharp tongue acts without counsel, while a wise individual bears much with patience. Here, the impulsiveness of a hot temper is contrasted with the virtue of self-discipline. Someone who reacts passionately to minor slights loses their composure and is likely to act recklessly, leading to future regret. In contrast, the wise person refrains from such reactions. Their strength lies in self-restraint, allowing them to endure insults without succumbing to indignation. By responding with silence, rather than anger, they disarm the offender and expose their folly.
