It is written, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord’ (Matt. 3:3). This means to be prepared to embrace the principles that Christ sought to establish as righteous; remove your heart from the influence of the law; turn away from the veneration of idols; and set aside thoughts of malice. Make straight the paths of your Lord (Matt. 3:3). For every path that leads to goodness is direct, smooth, and effortless; conversely, the other path is one of corruption, leading those who tread upon it to ruin. Concerning them, it is stated: whose ways are crooked, and who wander in their paths (Proverbs 2:15). Thus, a mind that is straight corresponds to a path that is true and without deviation.

As Jesus beheld Jerusalem, He wept for it, expressing, “Oh, if only you could understand, even today, what would bring you peace! But it is now concealed from your sight” (Luke 19:41-42). He spoke these words in reference to the impending destruction of a city. Our Savior continues this lamentation daily through His chosen ones when He observes some straying from a righteous path into sinful actions. He disciplines them, yet they fail to comprehend the reasons for their suffering, as, according to Solomon, they are those who revel in wrongdoing, finding pleasure in wickedness (Proverbs 2:14). Had they been aware of the judgment that awaited them, they would have grieved for their own fate.

Wisdom, grounded in the reverence of the Lord, along with understanding, serves as the finest guide for righteous living, preventing one from deviating from the true path. Their wise advice and encouragement toward pious reflections, which foster a pure and sanctified mindset, will safeguard those who heed these teachings from engaging in wrongdoing. They will also caution against the company of those who speak falsehoods—individuals who offer nothing reliable or trustworthy, providing only decay and harmful discourse. It is to such evildoers that Solomon directs his sharp rebukes.
