The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

A wise individual brings happiness to their parents, and when a person is a monarch, they bring honor to their nation; however, a sycophant merely entices their peers, while a rogue stirs up turmoil in the city. Even a sage who consorts with a fool cannot experience tranquility, and they are perpetually despised by those who act unjustly. The integrity and fairness of a leader impact their closest associates and the welfare of the community. Similarly, a good upbringing significantly influences the future conduct of a child, and rigorous discipline determines how a servant behaves. It is evident that the wicked creates strife among others, degrades themselves, and loathes their own spirit, while the virtuous receives honor and safety through the shelter of the Lord. As the path of the wicked is detestable to the righteous, so too is the righteous person an object of scorn for the wicked.
