The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

A discerning individual brings joy to their parents, and if that person is a sovereign, they bring honor to their nation; however, a flatterer merely misleads those around them, while a rogue provokes the community. Even a wise person who chooses to associate with a fool will find no peace and will invariably be despised by the wicked. The integrity and fairness of a leader influence their closest aides and the well-being of the nation; similarly, a solid education shapes the future of a son, just as strict discipline can guide the conduct of a servant. Should it be stated that the unjust stir strife among others, bring disgrace upon themselves, and foster disdain for their own being? In contrast, the righteous attain honor and security through the safeguarding of the Lord, just as the path of wickedness is detestable to the upright, leading them to be scorned by the unrighteous.
