Ephraem the Syrian
Teach, O God, the one who delights in knowledge, for such a devoted instructor will be esteemed in your kingdom (Matthew 5:19). The one who cherishes wisdom will see it flourish within them, while the one who embraces laziness will not prosper. Cultivate diligence, a precious reservoir of wisdom, and shun slothfulness, the source of all immorality. Engage earnestly with the Scriptures, for they are filled with insight; avoid gluttony, or risk forfeiting your accrued wisdom. Surround yourself with those who love God, but distance yourself from those who indulge in drunkenness. Embrace the fear of the Lord, the foundation of all wisdom; honor your parents, as their prayers will safeguard you.

Seek material wealth sparingly, but pursue knowledge boundlessly, for in times of sorrow, understanding will bring you solace and joy. If you possess treasures, do not boast or exhibit arrogance, but act with wisdom in all your dealings. Be humble in your youth, so that you may soar in your later years; cultivate virtuous habits in your spirit, that your life may overflow with happiness. Strive to learn and practice these values, dear disciple, so you may bring joy and pride to your parents and mentors. When in the company of elders, refrain from speaking hastily; remain silent until prompted, and then respond with humility. Choose your words carefully, that those who hear may commend you, bring joy to your parents, and cause your teachers to pray for you. Set aside specific times for every task, maintaining order in your eating, drinking, speaking, praying, and reading. Store your soul with good deeds while the opportunity remains, so that when you depart this world, you will be well-prepared for the next. Guard your tongue from oaths, blasphemy, and harmful language; instead, let your lips utter joyful hymns of praise. Take care, young man, of your youthful days, lest they become a fuel for destruction; remember the time of weakness and old age that approaches swiftly. Good sense surpasses weaponry (Ecclesiastes 9:18); knowledge is more valuable than wealth; a youthful mind imbued with wisdom is preferable to an old and foolish ruler. Pursue knowledge for yourself, young man, and align your ways wisely, so you may gain renown in this life and inherit the kingdom in the life to come. Honor your elders, show generosity toward them, sit at their feet continually, listen attentively, and learn from their words. Knowledge is a new illumination, brightening the eyes; treasure it, young man, so you may gain clarity and earn the admiration of those who hear you. Instruction creates a crown for those who cherish it, elevating them from the lowly and placing them among nobility (Psalm 112:7-8). Let books nourish you as a meal, filling you with delightful fare. Make them a resting place for your spirit, ensuring peaceful sleep. Avoid companionship with the wicked, do not form attachments with deceivers, and refrain from quarrels with the arrogant. Do not fall into disgrace, lest you be held in contempt by your peers. Heed the counsel of the wise and obey your parents' commands. Do not falsely testify against anyone who has wronged you. If you call someone your friend, be generous with your resources; treat your neighbors with kindness as you would want for yourself, and they shall bless you. Let the foundation of all your actions be honesty, ensuring your word is clear and trustworthy (Matthew 5:37). Speak truthfully, that all may hold you dear and should pray for your well-being, both near and far. Do good for your own and others wherever you can, and speak kindly to both the righteous and the unrighteous. Rely on the Lord, follow His path, adhere to His commandments, and do not place your trust in man, for he is ephemeral, vanishing as if he never existed. Place your unwavering faith in God alone, for those who trust in Him are blessed in both this life and the next. The world is fleeting, as it is written (1 John 2:17), but the certainty of judgment is assured. Remember this, young man, to guard against sin; if you err, be swift to repent. Shape your speech to magnify God, and let your tongue articulate beautiful praises; never swear or lie, for these actions please the adversary. Offer thanks, keep vigil, fast, and pray to God, and your voice will resound with sweet melodies of worship. Observe the fasts, be generous to the hungry, and dedicate time to prayer, as instructed by the son of Jesse (Psalm 118:164). It is far better to possess a good disposition than to amass wealth, for there is nothing more precious and significant in the world than a virtuous heart. Learn these principles, dear student; be mindful of your words; cherish noble things, that your spirit may be filled with joy. Pay close attention to what flows from your mouth; in all your endeavors, behave as the wise should. Reflect on your entrance into this life and your eventual exit, for you were formed from dust, and in an instant, you will return to dust. Remember the many glorious and mighty kings who came before you; see how they have faded from this world, and as they have waned, so shall you. Take heed of wise counsel should you stray into sin; if you are virtuous, guard against wrongdoing. It is a grave matter, beloved, to contemplate judgment. Let everyone turn away from sin and disentangle themselves from the world, lest they find themselves facing torment in the flames. Daily marvel at the greatness of your Lord, continually praising and glorifying Him, for even if you were to acquire the whole world, you would not escape death. May the Holy Trinity empower us to always fulfill His will and may He rescue us from the judgment that awaits those who do wrong.
