John Chrysostom
In stating that he alone delights, it suggests enjoyment.
Keep them to thyself alone, neither let strangers be partakers with thee.
יִֽהְיוּ־לְךָ֥ לְבַדֶּ֑ךָ וְאֵ֖ין לְזָרִ֣ים אִתָּֽךְ׃
5 Church Fathers comment on this verse
In stating that he alone delights, it suggests enjoyment.
Those who lack love for God are outsiders and are referred to as antichrists. Despite their presence within churches, they cannot be regarded as children of God, and the life-giving Source does not pertain to them. One can be baptized or possess the gift of prophecy and still be a wicked person. A notable example is King Saul, who prophesied while he pursued Saint David, even though he was filled with the spirit of prophecy and began to proclaim God's words (1 Samuel 19:20-24). Similarly, a malicious individual may partake of the sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ; concerning these individuals, it is written that whoever partakes unworthily brings judgment upon themselves (1 Corinthians 11:29).
A sinful person may carry the name of Christ; such persons are described as having defiled the name of their God (Ezekiel 36:20; LXX). Thus, while a wicked individual might access all these sacraments, they cannot possess true love and remain wicked at the same time. This love is a unique gift bestowed upon the righteous; it is the Source that belongs solely to them. From this Source, the Spirit of God invites us to partake; the Spirit of God beckons you to drink deeply of Himself.
Gather for yourself the fruit of joy and happiness. The sweetness of your grace resides within you; it is sourced from you and dwells in you. You should seek the sweetness of your clear conscience within yourself. Hence, it is declared, "Drink water from thy reservoir, and flowing from thy well."
The teacher shares with his young followers the wise counsel inherited from his parents, cautioning them against the lures of unfamiliar women, while encouraging them to seek joy and affection within their own households; they should do this confidently, for all paths are open before God, and any deviation from His commandments carries serious consequences.
Keep your belongings to yourself and do not allow outsiders to share in your fellowship. Fidelity in marriage is the guarantee of a thriving family. In contrast, those who are morally reckless waste their resources on others; however, a husband who remains devoted to his rightful wife accumulates wealth solely for himself and his family, excluding any outsiders from his estate.
