St... is referred to as a deer (Psalm 28:9) due to his stance against wickedness. In this context, Solomon states, "Let the deer of love and the stallion of thy grace speak unto thee," indicating that the deer mentioned possesses the ability to impart theological wisdom.

Throughout history, many have mourned the fragility of human existence, yet the greatest examples are found in St. Job and St. David. Job embodies a fierce spirit, unyielding and stern; the depths of his profound suffering have seemingly elevated him to the heights of divine worship. In contrast, David embodies gentleness and tranquility: his character is serene, mirroring the peaceful nature of the doe he chooses as a symbol (cf. Ps. 41:2). It may seem unusual to liken such a renowned prophet to an animal, yet the apostle also instructs us, “Be wise as serpents, and innocent as doves” (Matt. 10:16).

While these comparisons are paired with virtuous examples, and the nature of the doe is characterized by innocence and gentleness, it appears that the prophet specifically chose to draw inspiration from the doe. This choice resonates with the wisdom shared by Solomon, who, with paternal affection, states in Proverbs: “...The doe of love and the dove of grace shall be with you” (Proverbs 5:19; LXX).

In this passage, the teacher conveys to his youthful followers the valuable wisdom imparted by his parents, cautioning them against the allure of foreign women, while encouraging them to seek joy and affection within their own households. He emphasizes the importance of doing so with confidence, for to the Lord, all paths of humanity are known, and any transgression of divine law carries serious consequences.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

She, the embodiment of love and the cherished companion, should be allowed to speak to you freely, to walk beside you and be continually present in your life, for her companionship brings abundance. The faithful wife, as a lifelong friend to her husband, is beautifully likened to a young doe and other youthful creatures of the earth. The gentleness and playfulness of these young animals offer undeniable charm and delight to a man; they quickly bond with those who show them affection and become deeply attached, rarely straying from their side. This type of bond is often evident between newly married couples. Solomon, in urging the husband to maintain loyalty in his marriage, emphasizes the importance of nurturing the tender connection established in the early days of their union.

He hopes that this shared affection endures through the years, ensuring that the husband, who loves his wife and is loved in return, finds no reason to seek fulfillment elsewhere, but rather discovers joy in her company and friendship. His fulfillment in married life is not solely based on their bond but is also enriched through the multiplication of their family; he will find profound joy in children who are obedient and loving, creating new family experiences that are far more rewarding than any distractions outside the home.
