The Church Fathers on this verse

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

This teacher reiterates to his youthful followers the wise counsel of his parents, cautioning them against the allure of foreign women, encouraging them instead to seek joy and affection within their own households. He emphasizes this pursuit without hesitation, for to God, all pathways of man are accessible, and any deviation from divine law incurs grave consequences.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

A disloyal spouse might find solace in the illusion that their immoral actions with other women will go unnoticed, believing they can engage in adultery without consequence. However, the true motivation to resist such transgressions should stem not from the fear of human criticism or punishment, but from a reverent fear of God. The Almighty, who sees and knows all, cannot be deceived, and His righteous judgement will inevitably expose the unfaithful, bringing shame upon them in this life and beyond. When tempted, every husband should remember the example of Joseph the Righteous and reflect on this question: How can I commit such a wicked act and sin against God, who sees and knows everything?
