Acknowledge that the Father was in communion with Him and He with the Father. Concerning the moment of creation, Wisdom declares: “When He made the heavens, I was with Him, and when He established the fountains of waters.” Thus, in the Old Testament, the Father illustrates that the Son deserves to be revered just as the Father is, as both are the architects of existence. The beings brought forth by the Son were created through Him, indicating that when God is referred to in truth, it implies that the Son is equally recognized. The same applies to the Spirit, for God is acknowledged in the Spirit. Hence, the Father is invoked alongside the Son and the Spirit, as the Trinity is acknowledged.

Observe the inherent beauty that stems from God, who crafted this world splendidly; this beauty is evident in individual creations. For instance, when God called forth light and distinguished day from night (cf. Gen. 1:3), when He divided land from sea, and when He established the sun, moon, and stars to illuminate the earth, He blessed each element individually. Therefore, the beauty present in each aspect of creation also permeates the entire cosmos, as Wisdom recognizes in the proclamation: “I was beside Him like a master workman, and I was daily His delight, rejoicing before Him always” (cf. Proverbs 8:30-31). Similarly, while each part of the human body is attractive, there is a greater beauty found in the harmonious arrangement of all its members, as each one occupies its rightful place, contributing to a unified whole.

This divine Wisdom revealed itself as the Creator of the heavens and the earth, bringing forth day and night, fulfilling all things through the authority of the Word, for it is God.

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

The wise individual listens to the voice of Wisdom herself, who calls out to all people from elevated and bustling places. Acknowledging that her hands are filled with truth and significance, she reveals her divine qualities and actions as the embodied Wisdom. She empowers her followers with strength, riches, and success. As co-creator alongside God the Creator, she shares in the creation of the world and now invites everyone to receive her teachings, promising to grant them wisdom and joy. The Lord established me as the beginning of His ways, in His works. The Hebrew text here uses the term 'kanani,' meaning 'acquired,' suggesting that the more accurate rendering, instead of the Greek 'created,' should be seen as 'acquired,’ as affirmed by the holy fathers in their discussions with the Arians.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

This passage discusses the ethereal expanse above the earth, filled with air, which is essential for respiration and the transmission of sound and light. The winds represent movements of this air, crucial for revitalizing the atmosphere, dispersing clouds and mists, and transporting moisture from one location to another. The winds are described as the location of the Lord’s throne, indicating that they act as vessels for the omnipotent power of God, influencing the world positively or negatively. Although they are inherently blind forces of nature, their directions are governed by the Lord Himself, who reveals His presence within them, as if His royal throne were established upon them, guided by His goodness, wisdom, and justice.

When the Divine hypostatic Wisdom proclaims that she was with the Lord during the creation of the heavens and the establishment of His throne upon the winds, it signifies that she was not merely an observer of God's works but actively engaged in them, as elucidated in the subsequent verses.
