Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

Acknowledge that the Father was present with Him, and He with the Father. Regarding the time of creation, Wisdom declares: "When He made the heavens, I was with Him, and when He made the springs of waters." Thus, in the Old Testament, the Father indicates that the Son is to be honored equally as the Creator of all things. The creatures fashioned by the Son find their existence within Him, so when God is truthfully acknowledged, it should be understood, in accordance with the very essence of the words spoken, that it encompasses the Son as well. Similarly, the Spirit is included, for God is identified in the Spirit. Therefore, the Father is invoked alongside the Son and the Spirit, for the Trinity is invoked together.

One can observe beauty in general, as God has made this world a remarkable creation. This beauty is also evident in distinct elements; when God brought forth light and distinguished day from night (cf. Gen. 1:3), separated dry land from the waters, and set the sun, moon, and stars to illuminate the earth, He commended each creation. Thus, the beauty inherent in every individual aspect of creation reflects in the entire universe, as Wisdom acknowledges in the words: "I was that which He praised when He rejoiced in having made the universe" (cf. Proverbs 8:30-31). Similarly, in the human body, while each part is pleasing, there is a greater harmony in the elegant unity of all the members, as each one fulfills its role in perfect coordination with the others.

This divine Wisdom revealed itself in the creation of the heavens and the earth, functioning in concert with the day and all that exists. It accomplished this through the authority of the Word, for it embodies the essence of God.

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

The discerning individual heeds the call of wisdom itself. She proclaims her message to everyone from elevated and bustling locations and, recognizing that her hands overflow with truth and significance, reveals her divine attributes and actions as the incarnate Wisdom. She bestows upon her followers strength, wealth, and success; she stands alongside God the Creator as a co-creator of the universe. She now invites all to receive her teachings, assuring them that she will impart wisdom and joy.

"The Lord created me the beginning of his ways, in his works." In the original Hebrew, the term ‘kanani’ translates to ‘acquired,’ suggesting that instead of the Greek interpretation of ‘created,’ it would be more accurately rendered as ‘acquired,’ as affirmed by the early church fathers in their discussions against the Arians.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

The Lord fashioned the universe purely out of His benevolence, intending to have companions in His joy. He did not require creation; nothing could enhance the completeness of His bliss since the essence of His joy resides within Himself. It is remarked that joy loses its meaning if it is not shared, and happiness lacks substance in solitude, devoid of empathy from others. However, in the context of perfect joy needing companionship, God had a partner even prior to the world's inception. Though He is one, He was never solitary. For the Father has eternally possessed the only begotten Son and, from eternity, the Holy Spirit who proceeds from Him.

The eternal life of the Godhead is characterized by the fellowship among the three Divine Persons, and this unity serves as an unending wellspring of joy for them. This insight illuminates the statement of the Divine Hypostatic Wisdom: “I am the One about whom the Lord rejoiced,” indicating that I have been the focus of His joy from eternity past; His delight and love rest upon me eternally, as He cherished me before the world was established (John 17:24). Moreover, Wisdom proclaims, “I have been joyful in His presence each day,” affirming that for God the Father, I was joy and gladness, and I continuously rejoiced, participating in genuine communion with Him. This teaching is highlighted during the Feast of the Circumcision of the Lord, demonstrating that the eight-day-old Jesus, who received circumcision, is indeed the eternally begotten Son of God. Though He was eight days old according to His mother, He is timeless from the perspective of the Father. Through the act of circumcision, He entered into covenant with God, establishing eternal fellowship as His only begotten Son according to His divine nature. This teaching is reinforced on the Feast of the Annunciation, celebrating Christ’s conception in the flesh through the Virgin Mary, emphasizing that while Christ is without beginning in His divine essence, He had His earthly beginning through His mother. Why are these truths highlighted on both feasts? It is to encourage us to honor and love with all our hearts Him who, out of love for humanity, took on our nature. Though without beginning, He became a child for our benefit and salvation.
