You grasp what it means to be worthy, as God has fashioned the splendor of this creation. You can also recognize the specific expressions of worthiness: when God commanded light to exist and divided day from night, when He formed the sky and distinguished land from water, and when He set the sun, moon, and stars in place to light the earth, He declared everything good (see Gen. 1:3-19). The beauty that emerged in different aspects of the world radiated throughout the entire cosmos. Wisdom distinctly reveals this: I was the one whom He delighted in, rejoicing at the completion of creation (Proverbs 8:30-31). Similarly, within the intricate design of the human body, every individual part is admirable, yet it is the harmonious interplay of all parts that is truly beautiful, as each fulfills its role and exists in unity with the others.

Acknowledge that the Father was present with the Son, and the Son with the Father. Concerning the creation of all things, Wisdom proclaims: “When He made the heavens, I was with Him, and when He made the springs of waters.” Therefore, in the Old Testament, it is evident that the Son deserves to receive the same honor as the Father, who is the Creator. The creatures made by the Son exist through Him, leading to an understanding that the references to God also apply to the Son, as the essence of the words implies. Similarly, the Spirit is recognized, since God is also identified in the Spirit. Thus, the Father is acknowledged alongside the Son and the Spirit because we speak of the Trinity.

You can witness beauty universally since God shaped this world with magnificence; it is also present in individual entities. For when God created light and distinguished day from night (cf. Gen. 1:3), separated land from sea, and positioned the sun, moon, and stars to illuminate the earth, He praised each creation. The beauty found in every single creation reflects that of the entire cosmos, as Wisdom articulates: “I was that which He praised when He rejoiced in having made the universe” (cf. Proverbs 8:30-31). Similarly, while each part of the human body has its own charm, the true beauty lies in the harmonious arrangement of all its members, as they occupy their respective places in perfect unity.

This Revelation of Wisdom brought forth the skies and the earth, establishing the day and completing all creation through the might of the Word, for this Word is indeed God.

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

The discerning individual listens to the call of wisdom itself. She cries out to humanity from elevated and populated places and, acknowledging the fullness of her hands with truth and significance, reveals her divine attributes and actions as hypostatic Wisdom. She bestows upon her adherents strength, abundance, and success; she collaborates with God the Creator in the act of creation, sharing in the formation of the world. Now, she invites all to receive her teachings, promising to impart wisdom and joy. The Lord established me as the beginning of His paths, in His works.

The Hebrew text uses the term ‘kanani’ meaning ‘acquired,’ suggesting that rather than the Greek term εκτισε meaning created, it should more accurately be understood as one who has acquired, a viewpoint affirmed by holy fathers such as Athanasius and Eusebius during their discussions with the Arians, who also rendered it as εκτησατο, meaning possessed, similar to the translations of Aquila and found in the Vulgate of Psalm 138:13.
