The Church Fathers on this verse

5 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Augustine of Hippo

5th centuryChurch Father

They initially inflicted pain upon Me as I bore a frail and burdensome body. The Lord became My refuge. When the realm of worldly joys was shattered and ravaged by the anguish of suffering, the Lord became My dwelling place.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

In the time of my suffering, I perceive that the Prophet refers to the uprising of Absalom following his transgression. It is the turmoil, as Simmachus conveys through the term distress, that represents the mental weakness leading to sin. “And the Lord was my affirmation” signifies that, despite being thrown down and humiliated, the Prophet found strength in God.

Euthymios Zigabenos

11th centuryCommentator

The term ‘to precede’ does not exclusively imply possessing something beforehand; at times, it simply denotes occupying a space or catching someone off guard. This is certainly true in the context described here. The psalmist states that adversaries, both seen and unseen, have come against me; they attacked when I was least equipped to defend myself. They were most likely to strike when they perceived my weariness and vulnerability. Yet, the Lord was my refuge. Even as I seemed on the brink of collapse, it was during this moment of utter frailty that the Lord became my strength in my weakness, restoring my spirit. ‘Support,’ which symbolizes the staff that the weary often rely upon.

Irenaeus (Klementjewsky)

18th centuryCommentator

He reiterates the account of his rescue from adversaries to demonstrate that God's goodness is profoundly etched in his mind. He states that his foes, during his time of distress, conspired unanimously to bring about his ruin; before he could even defend himself, they launched their attack without caution. Nevertheless, the Lord safeguarded him, and in His compassion, ensured that their schemes and deceit could not harm him. The Lord has brought me into a spacious place, meaning He has delivered me from the incessant accusations of my enemies, lifting me out with His strong hand into an open field where I can walk and breathe freely, untroubled by those who slander me. He rescued me according to His desire, freeing me from all the perils and anxieties that surrounded me, and He did so because He loved me in accordance with His extraordinary mercy.

Psalter with Commentaries (Cave Monastery in Kiew)

19th centuryCommentator

However, God the Father, in response to their wickedness, prevented His Holy One from experiencing decay (Psalm 15:10), and they remain eternally disgraced by the Resurrection of Christ. The Spirit of God within the Church of Christ revitalizes, gives birth, and sustains with the Body and Blood of Christ, while preparing eternal joy in heaven for the faithful.
