Augustine of Hippo

They pursue it with the intention of destroying it, and I wish they would seek it eternally! In another psalm, it is lamented that no one sought out His soul. The lamentation states, "Refuge failed me: there was none to seek my soul." Who makes the claim that there was no one to seek His soul? Is it not He of whom it was foretold long ago, "They pierced My hands and My feet; they counted all My bones; they looked and stared upon Me; they divided My garments among themselves and cast lots for My clothing"? All these events unfolded before their eyes, and yet none sought His soul.

Many were ashamed for their healing; many, in their shame, moved from the persecution of Christ to the fellowship of His followers with true devotion; this transition would not have occurred without their shame and humiliation. Thus, He wished them well.

They should not lead the way but rather follow; they ought not to offer counsel, but rather take heed. Peter stood before the Lord when He spoke of His impending suffering, attempting to give Him what could be seen as advice concerning His wellbeing. A sick man advising the Healer on His health! What was Peter's response when the Lord revealed His future suffering? "Far be it from You, Lord. Have mercy on Yourself. It shall not happen to You." He attempted to lead, and the Lord rebuked him with, "Get behind Me, Satan." (Matthew 16:22-23) By going ahead of Satan, one may appear to follow him, yet they would ultimately be counted as a disciple. The same message was relayed to them: "Let them turn back and bring to confusion those who plot evil against me." For once they began to follow, they would no longer harbor evil thoughts against me, but instead desire my welfare.

May they falter in their plans, declares the Prophet, and may their deceptive efforts result in their disgrace.

Euthymios Zigabenos

11th centuryCommentator

May those who pursue my life experience shame and humiliation. Those who aim to take my life will find themselves disgraced as they shall not succeed, for your strength will thwart them. Likewise, let those who harbor malevolent intentions against me return in defeat and be filled with shame.

Irenaeus (Klementjewsky)

18th centuryCommentator

The Prophet articulates the ultimate purpose for which God rises against the unrighteous. He speaks with the authority of an oath, declaring that they will experience shame and humiliation. This indicates that not only will their plans come to naught, but they will also receive just retribution for their actions from the divine avenger. As if to state, those who pursue my life will be filled with shame. The phrase "those who pursue my life" can be interpreted in different ways. In Psalm 141:5, it expresses a positive sentiment: "Flee from me; perish, and there is none who seeks my soul," signifying a lack of sanctuary and the absence of anyone to seek me out and offer protection.

Conversely, it can denote a negative connotation in this context, where seeking a life implies an intent to harm. In the latter part of the verse, he illustrates that his adversaries will not only experience disgrace but will also flee in defeat. He further adds a third point:

Psalter with Commentaries (Cave Monastery in Kiew)

19th centuryCommentator

After the Resurrection of Christ the Lord, the unrighteous Jews returned to their iniquity, even as grace, land, royal authority, and the priestly office were stripped from them, leaving their wickedness intact. It was beyond the ability of the immortal Lord to prevail over them.
