John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

"Lord, lead me in Your righteousness for the sake of my adversaries." After declaring to the glory of God His disdain for wickedness and His merciful nature, and reflecting on her own salvation and the way it was achieved—emphasizing her turning away from sin and embracing virtue, and offering hope to those who live in wrongdoing, that they too might receive mercy if they choose to repent—she then shifts her speech into a prayer: "Lord, lead me in Your righteousness. Lead me in Your righteousness." Through this, she instructs the listener, first to commend God and express gratitude for His blessings, and then to voice her petitions, all the while giving thanks for each answer received.

Now, let us consider what she is requesting. Is it not something of this world? Is it not fleeting? Does she seek wealth? Is it worldly fame? Does she call for authority? Is she asking for revenge against her foes? She seeks none of these. Her request is, "Lord, lead me in Your righteousness for the sake of my adversaries." It is evident that she desires nothing temporal, but rather implores for divine assistance. Those who follow this path particularly require such guidance. "Truth," in this context, signifies virtue in its entirety, and her choice of words—“in Your truth”—is well-founded; for there exists human truth, grounded in external norms, yet it is of little consequence, lacking both wholeness and perfection, rooted in human judgments. She yearns for Your truth, which descends from You and elevates to heaven; she also seeks assistance to attain this truth.

Furthermore, her choice of the word "guide" is apt, as life is indeed a journey necessitating divine direction. If we require someone to direct us while seeking entry into a city, how much more imperative is it to seek a higher guidance when aspiring to enter heaven, to affirm our resolve, and to steer us, given the many distractions that can lead us astray? Thus, we must cling to the right hand of God.

"For the sake of my adversaries." Many have arisen against me, attempting to deter me from this righteous path and lead me astray into another direction. Amid such malice and temptation, You alone provide guidance; I am in need of Your help. However, if it is God's role to guide, then it is our responsibility to be deserving of such divine direction. If one is impure, then the right hand of God will not uphold them; for instance, if one is greedy or harboring other impurities. "Make Your way straight before me," means make it known, clear, and familiar; make it a direct path for me. Another interpretation renders it, "level Your way before me," suggesting the need for it to be convenient and straightforward.

He has clearly expressed that he is progressing towards maturity, yet he has not attained it completely, as he fervently wishes to be guided forth. However, it must be according to Your righteousness, not according to human perceptions. To repay evil with evil may appear just, but it does not align with divine justice, which is illustrated by the phrase, He commands His sun to shine on both the just and the unjust. Even when God administers punishment to wrongdoers, He does not impose harm upon them but permits them to act according to their own choices.

For instance, the Psalmist observes that the wicked suffer from their own unrighteousness; they generate toil and give birth to sin, digging a pit only to fall into it—they will have their suffering returned upon their own heads, for their iniquity will be upon themselves. God's judgment punishes lawbreakers not by inflicting His own evil, but by allowing them to reap the consequences of their own decisions that culminate in their suffering. In contrast, when a person retaliates with evil, they do so with a malicious intent, rendering themselves the initial source of evil when they seek to punish wrongdoing. Thus, direct Your path before me, for it is unmistakable that he refers to the journey he is undertaking. This journey is not along earthly pathways but within the affections of the heart. He requests that You, O Lord, guide his way where no human can see; for human judgment in praise or blame is unreliable. They cannot discern the true state of another's conscience, through which the route to God is traveled. Therefore, it is added, ‘For the truth is not in their mouths’ (Psalms 5:9).

The significance of Sacred Scripture is profound. How shall we find our path? By engaging with the Scriptures, we commit ourselves to not distort their message, especially as we desire to join Thy Church. Those who fail to grasp the meaning of Scripture properly wander away from the divine way.

I yearn to enter Your house and desire to do so in a righteous manner. However, my adversaries continually obstruct my paths, and as I seek to enter Your dwelling, I encounter stumbling blocks

Certain translations convey the sentiment: ‘My path lies before me’; yet both interpretations reflect a devout notion. If our paths are aligned correctly with God’s will, we will be safeguarded against wandering astray; and if God’s path is made clear to us, we will naturally embrace it and walk therein. Thus, the one who inherits seeks to be led by the truth of God and desires her path to be made straight and illuminated, facilitating her journey. This understanding aligns with Symmachus's interpretation of the text, where he uses ‘equalise’ instead of ‘correct.’ Furthermore, Christ Himself, as proclaimed through Isaiah the Prophet, states: ‘The crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways smooth’ (Isaiah 40:4).

Additionally, the blessed David affirms in another psalm: ‘The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way’ (Ps. 36:23). The heiress's request is steeped in humility; she seeks her paths to be mended not out of her own righteousness, but due to the presence of her adversaries who dwell in wickedness and unjustly persecute her. The Prophet then elaborates on the misdeeds of these evildoers.

Euthymios Zigabenos

11th centuryCommentator

O Lord, lead me in Your righteousness. He asks for guidance through Your Son, who, as the Apostle notes, is our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption (1 Corinthians 1:30), and according to Your law, which embodies the righteousness of humanity. For my sake, my adversaries prepare a straight path before You. He speaks of both visible and unseen foes who constantly create obstacles and temptations in my journey; hence, I implore You, O God, to smooth my path in Your presence. Or, ‘make straight’ me, that I may not wander to the right or to the left and evade the hidden snares set by my enemies. While these words of the psalm primarily address the Church, they also hold significance for David himself.

Irenaeus (Klementjewsky)

18th centuryCommentator

I humbly seek Your grace, asking that through it You guide me along the path of righteousness and assist me in following Your commandments, enabling me to steer clear of all sins that are detestable to You. For this purpose, I request that You transform my ways before You, helping me to walk in the way of holiness, always holding Your reverence in my sight, O God. Please accomplish this for the sake of my adversaries, so that I may be shielded from their deceit and schemes. This prayer reflects the plea of the Prophet, highlighting our profound need for God's assistance, which corrects, covers, precedes, and accompanies us amidst the multitude of foes who pursue us and tempt us to sin. He identifies all those who obstruct our journey to salvation as adversaries, even if some appear to be friendly, for indeed, the enemies of a person can be found within his own household (Matthew 10:36).

Psalter with Commentaries (Cave Monastery in Kiew)

19th centuryCommentator

The prophet implores, O Lord, let me act in accordance with your will, for true righteousness is elusive. Engaging in the commandments through love for God and our neighbors embodies the path of Christ, who is the truth and the life. Our adversaries consist of demons and all who act unrighteously, luring humanity into sin. This earthly existence is but temporary, necessitating divine guidance to rise to the heavens.
