The Church Fathers on this verse

6 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Augustine of Hippo

5th centuryChurch Father

My spirit is heavy, declares the Oneness from every corner of the earth, and I cry out amid trials and tribulations: the jealousy of the nations, because they are vanquished; false teachers call out, concealed under the guise of the Christian faith: even within the Church, the true believers suffer violence at the hands of the unworthy: in the midst of all this, when my heart is burdened, I will call out from the farthest reaches. But He who has not abandoned me, who has lifted me upon the Rock, to draw me near to Himself, for although I strive, while the adversary at various times and places seeks to befriend me, He is my stronghold, to which I run for sanctuary, so that not only will I escape the enemy's assaults, but I can also take refuge within Him and launch any arrows I wish.

For Christ is the stronghold; He has become a fortress for us against the foe, and He is the Rock upon which the Church stands. Take care, lest you be struck by the adversary. Flee to the Stronghold; no arrows of the devil will reach you there: in that place, you will find safety and assurance. But how do you reach the Stronghold? Let the one who is facing temptation not seek this shelter with mere physical effort, for if he fails to find it, he may grow tired or feeble amidst his struggles. The Stronghold is before you: remember Christ and enter within...

Athanasius the Great

4th centuryChurch Father

You have led me, as you have been my source of faith. If He is the path and the gateway, it is clear that He will also instruct us to walk in righteousness, having placed our confidence in Him. A source of fortitude in the presence of adversaries. This is akin to stating, “You have become a fortress for me, assuring that I will endure no harm from wicked foes.”

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

When I anticipated participating in your mission, my hope was not misplaced. You have become my guide and my steadfast support. With Your protection over me, having evaded the wickedness of the adversary, I shall also be revitalized.

Euthymios Zigabenos

11th centuryCommentator

You have led me along the right path. For you have been my source of hope—a stronghold in the face of adversaries. The Lord declares that you have directed me toward goodness and righteousness; indeed, you have been my hope for deliverance, serving as a solid fortress against my foes, thwarting their attempts to harm me.

Irenaeus (Klementjewsky)

18th centuryCommentator

The phrase "ends of the earth" can refer not only to the geographical boundaries of the world where David found himself in exile, but also to the vast space separating the one who laments and the one to whom the lament is directed. The God to whom we call is exalted above the heavens, while the one in need is situated at the farthest corners of the earth, or in the very depths of despair, as the Prophet expresses: 'Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord (Psalm 129:1)!' For it is with a powerful voice that one must call out from such depths, yearning to be heard by Him who reigns on the Cherubim, above all creation. The individual who comprehends the immense chasm between their own insignificance and the perfection of the unfathomable God has no other way to address Him.

When my heart was in turmoil, You lifted me up upon a solid rock and guided my path. He articulates why he cries out to God with such steadfast hope: for he has discovered through trials that during his times of distress, mourning, and despair, he was never abandoned by God. The Lord, witnessing my heart crushed by sorrow, quickly extended His aid, rescuing me from the depths of despair and establishing me on a solid foundation of trust. He further states: You have been to me a stronghold against my adversaries. The one who places their trust in God and reflects on the sufferings endured by Christ, our Head, whom we look towards for guidance on what we must do, what we must face in this life, and what awaits us in eternity: such a person surely ascends to a great stronghold, standing firm not only against the assaults of enemies but also countering them with their own blows. David stood on such a stronghold, and for this reason, he proclaimed:

Psalter with Commentaries (Cave Monastery in Kiew)

Ultimately, in Christ, through song, we offer praise and exaltation from our hearts and mouths for all eternity. This psalm, inspired by the Holy Spirit unto David, shall be sung until the end of time; in it, the prophet cries out to God amid his sufferings, expressing gratitude for salvation. This supplication also holds significance for the Jewish people during their Babylonian exile, particularly for the faithful, or the Church of Christ, as they face various tribulations, longing for their heavenly home and the eternal peace for those who yearn (Theodoret). It is essential to conclude this prayer with a sincere will and a pure desire for a virtuous life, as it is written: "whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God" (1 Cor. 10:31) (Basil the Great). The stone of Golgotha is where Christ was lifted upon the cross, raising up fallen Adam.
