The Church Fathers on this verse

Revelation 18:23Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

And the light of the lamp shall shine no more at all in thee: and the voice of the bridegroom and the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee. For thy merchants were the great men of the earth: for all nations have been deceived by thy enchantments.

Douay-Rheims

The reason for this is that by its sweet singing and sorceries this city deceived all nations and became the receptacle of the blood of prophets and saints.

All this probably points to the impious Persian Babylon. For at different times, even to the present, it has shed the blood of many saints and delighted in deceiving others by sorceries.

Therefore let us desire and pray that this city may receive the appointed recompense for its pride against Christ and His servants.

Yet, as we think, the opinion of the ancient teachers of the Church somewhat contradicts this. They referred these prophecies to Roman Babylon.

For Rome, the fourth beast, had ten horns. Of these, the highest will uproot three and subject the others to himself.

He will appear as a Roman king, supposedly to strengthen and restore their authority, but in reality to accomplish their final devastation.

Therefore he too will think plausibly who understands by it, as was said earlier, the worldly kingdom ruling as one body from the beginning until now. It has shed the blood of apostles, prophets, and martyrs.

For they say that an army and a city are one, though the persons who compose them change. So too the kingdom is called one, despite its divisions and distributions among many places in different years.

Thus John calls Babylon a great millstone, as it were, thrown down, because the course of time grinds all lovers of this world like a millstone and hurls them into its turning. Of them it is written, "The ungodly walk in a circle" (Ps 11:9).

"And the sound of harpists and singers, of flute players and trumpeters, shall be heard in you no more." John says that the merriment of the ungodly will pass away and be no more.

He indicated the reason, saying, "For your merchants were the great men of the earth," that is, in your life they found every possible good.

"And by your sorcery all nations were led astray. And in it was found the blood of prophets and saints, and of all who were slain on the earth."

Did the same city kill the apostles as killed the prophets and all the other saints? Rather, this is the city of all the proud. Cain founded it upon his brother's blood and called the city by the name of his son, Enoch (Gen 4:17).

That is, it is the city of his descendants. All the evil inherit themselves, and Babylon is present in them. Until the end of the world they persecute the Church of God.

Therefore, in the city of Cain all righteous blood is poured out, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah. This means in the city of the people and the priests.

"Between the temple and the altar" (Mt 23:35), that is, between the people and the priests. This is said because not only the people, but also the priests, conspired in the death of Zechariah.

This is the city that killed the prophets and stoned those sent to it. This is the city built upon blood, as it is written, "Woe to him who builds a city with blood and establishes fortresses by unrighteousness!" (Hab 2:12).

All this will come upon Babylon because, through idleness, pursuit of life's pleasures, and other temptations, it drew many away from God. Those who reproved it for this it persecuted with savage cruelty and shed their blood.

Some interpreters understand this great harlot, Babylon, spoken of in chapters 17 and 18 of Revelation, as the faithless Church. That is, it is a society of Christians who have lost and abandoned faith in God.

It consists of a mixture, for Babylon means confusion, of earthly and heavenly things. They have trampled the priceless pearl of the grace of the Holy Spirit, received in Baptism, into the mire of their own soul, uncleansed from passions and earthly attachments.

Is this not why the Lord calls such people lukewarm, that is, wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked, threatening them with complete rejection (cf. Rev 3:16; Isa 47; Jer 50 and 51; Ezek 27 and 28)?

Yet a royal reward is appointed for those who can see their true condition, do not reject the healing ointment offered to them, and repent: "To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat with My Father on His throne" (Rev 3:21).
