The essence of the whole faith consists in confessing perfect Godhead and true humanity in one and the same Christ. Concerning moral purity, John says, “But to those who received Him, who believed in His name, He gave power to become children of God” (Jn 1:12), indicating the reward of faith and love.
It seems that John speaks in a similar way here. He alludes to Christ in the letters alpha and omega, and by white garments he signifies a blameless life. For this he likewise promises the same reward, saying, “that they may have the right to the tree of life.”

The tree of life is Christ, because we read, “Wisdom is a tree of life to those who acquire her” (Prov 3:18). And the saints enter the city through the gates, of which it is written: “Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will enter them and praise the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it” (Ps 118:19-20).
That is, one cannot enter this city except through Christ, Who said, “I am the door” (Jn 10:9), and, “No one comes to the Father except through Me” (Jn 14:6).
