Revelation 6:12Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

And I saw, when he had opened the sixth seal: and behold there was a great earthquake. And the sun became black as sackcloth of hair: and the whole moon became as blood.

Some have referred these words to the devastation under Vespasian, taking them in a figurative sense. But we think this speaks of the transition from the period of persecutions to the time of the coming of Antichrist. According to the prophecies, at that time these and similar plagues are to occur. By reflecting on them, men should not deny the punishments brought upon them by Antichrist, which, as we know, have never yet occurred. The earthquake, often mentioned by Scripture, signifies a change of affairs. The expression "Yet once more I will shake" (Hag 2:7) means, as the Apostle says, the alteration of what can be shaken (Heb 12:26-27). In the Old Testament, concerning Israel's march, it is said: "The earth shook, for the heavens dropped" (Ps 67:9). The blackening of the sun and the dark-blood appearance of the moon signify, according to blessed Cyril's explanation, the darkness of soul that overtakes those struck by God's wrath.

The opening of the sixth seal secures our perfect salvation. It overthrew death, restored life, and stripped the conqueror of men of his crown, openly triumphing over him. It accords with what is written: "The Only-begotten ascended on high, led captivity captive, and received gifts for men" (Ps 67:19). What, then, is the opening of the sixth seal? It is the Cross and death of the Lord, the Resurrection and Ascension, awaited by every creation, both noetic and bodily. They opened for us "a new and living way," an ascent from destruction to life "through the veil, that is, His flesh" (Heb 10:19-20). This benefitted not only the living, but also those who had died before.

For according to the divine Apostle Peter, the Lord "went and preached to the spirits in prison, who formerly were disobedient" (1 Pet 3:19-20). He saved those who even there believed, as it seems to Cyril. Heb 10:19-20 says: "having boldness to enter the sanctuary by the Blood of Jesus Christ, by a new and living way which He opened for us through the veil, that is, His flesh." Cyril of Alexandria, Fragments on the Catholic Epistles (PG 74:1013). Clearly the vision lists for us the signs related to the Savior's death on the Cross: the earthquake and rumbling on earth, the darkening of the sun, and the turning of the whole moon to blood. With full reason he applied the term whole to the moon. For on the day of the Crucifixion it was in full light, not on the threshold of the full moon, and in its fullness it met the Lord's sufferings [...]. The prophet Joel also foretold that this would come to pass: "The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes" (Joel 2:31). The falling of the stars from heaven may perhaps have natural causes. If not, the saying means that the light of the heavens will cease and complete darkness will come. In the Synodal translation, the word whole is omitted: "and the moon became like blood."

The Church is destined to shed more blood than usual for Christ. John speaks of something great, because in the last times there will be an earthquake over the whole earth. Before this, as Scripture says, earthquakes will occur in various places (cf. Mt 24:7).

Was it not from these temptations that the Lord promised to preserve the Church of Philadelphia, the sixth in order among His messages to the Churches? Beneath the figurative prophetic language lies a meaning no less mysterious. By earthquake one usually understands a change in the existing order of things. The sun signifies life. The moon is the reflection of this life in something else. The stars are bright personalities, rulers of minds and hearts. Heaven is the veil over the mystery, a barrier. Mountains and islands signify certain unshakable foundations. Nothing other than madness can describe the desire to hide behind perishable matter from the two-edged spiritual sword.

Yet the events described here are the direct consequence of man's ineradicable desire to put his soul into fleeting corruption. The expression "from the wrath of the Lamb" is remarkable. Who fears the wrath of the meek Lamb? His seven horns strike no one. If it had said, "from the fury of the Lion of Judah," that would understandably be terrible. But it says, "from the wrath of the Lamb." Thus meekness and truth become a terrible punishment for the unrepentant. Their unrepented deeds go before them, blazing as wood, hay, and straw (cf. 1 Cor 3:12) under the meek gaze of Christ. This wrath is terrible. The sinner fears and flees, though no one pursues him. Torments of soul are far more terrible than bodily torments. This is the worm that never sleeps. Therefore, "seek the Lord. Perhaps you may be hidden on the day of the Lord's wrath" (Zeph 2:3), before "the cruel day of the Lord comes, with wrath and burning anger," when "the heavens will be shaken and the earth will be moved from its place by the fury of the Lord Sabaoth, in the day of His burning anger" (Is 13:9-13).
