God speaks to the revered prophet Zechariah, or through him addresses all who are associated with Zerubbabel, a descendant of the tribe of Judah and a leader over the Israelites, as appointed by the royal lineage. It is essential to first remember what God said regarding him: "the hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundations of this house, and his hands shall finish it" (Zech. 4:9). Alongside him, during the establishment and completion of the temple, stood Jesus son of Josedec, the high priest.

Consequently, the Almighty instructed His prophet to retrieve "the treasures from the captivity from the princes, and from his keys, and from those who had insight." It is important to clarify who this is and what is meant by "the treasures from the captivity." The Israelites did not return from Babylon haphazardly, but rather in an orderly fashion, according to their clans and tribes, led by appointed leaders and chiefs, as recorded in the Book of Ezra. Upon their arrival in Jerusalem, prompted by God to construct the temple, they established a treasury to gather funds for the work, for priestly vestments, and for the offerings required by the law. Josiah, son of Sophonias, was appointed as the custodian of this money.

The Lord's word came to me, instructing me to accept the offerings from the captivity of Heldai, Tobiah, and Jedi, and to proceed into the residence of Josiah, son of Sophonias, who has returned from Babylon. You are to take his silver and gold, fashion a crown, and place it on the head of Josiah, son of Josedech, the high priest. The prophet speaks once more to the priestly order, intending to honor him with a golden crown provided by the righteous men. This crown, crafted from the resources of those who returned from Babylon, is intended to adorn Jesus.

The initial creation of this crown began in Josiah’s house; however, the individuals named contributed their efforts and gold to ensure its completion, partly to exalt the high priest and partly to establish a lasting remembrance for themselves within the Lord's temple.

Jerome of Stridon

The word of the Lord came to me, instructing me to take from the captives—specifically from the princes, their attendants, and those who know him. On this day, I am to visit the house of Josiah, son of Sophonias, who returned from Babylon. I must collect silver and gold to fashion crowns, which will then be placed upon the head of Joses, the high priest. Speak to him, saying: Thus says the Lord Almighty, Behold the Man, whose name is the East. He will be born and will establish the house of the Lord. He will be endowed with authority, sit down, and reign on his throne. He shall serve as a priest at his right hand, and the counsel of peace shall exist between them. This crown is for those who await him, for his faithful servants, and for those who recognize him.

It is also for grace upon the son of Sophonias and for a song in the house of the Lord. Those who are distant shall come and be brought into the house of the Lord. You will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you; it will indeed happen if you attentively heed the voice of the Lord your God.

As I attempt to share mysteries of Hebrew wisdom and the hidden teachings of the synagogue for Latin audiences, aligned with the Scriptures, it is essential that I delineate the historical context in interpreting the more obscure passages. This will allow me to present the widely held views of the church's leaders while giving the reader the freedom to discern what is most honorable. First, the sequence of reading must be restored so that the meaning is clear according to the text itself. Receive, he says, from Goldaiah, Tobiah, and Edai, who have come from the Babylonian captivity. Accept their offerings of silver and gold, and proceed into the house of Josiah, son of Sophonias, to create crowns, varying based on the amount of silver and gold—more than one crown, as the term “crowns” can be either dual or plural.

Theodoret of Cyrus

"And he cried out to me, saying, 'Look, those who have departed into the land of the north have found rest for My Spirit in the land of the north.' This signifies that I have administered righteous judgment upon the Babylonians, a penalty they had long warranted but had not yet experienced within My humanity. Following these visions, the Prophet is instructed to accept the offerings brought by the exiles. However, this is not a call for all, but specifically for 'those of the princes, and of his keys, and of those who comprehend him.' This refers to those who have endured the hardships, understand the reasons behind the captivity, and recognize its benefits.

Then the Prophet recalls the names of Eldai, Tobiah, and Eden, and is directed to go 'into the house of Josiah Sophonias, who is arriving now from Babylon,' and to acquire 'silver and gold' so that he may forge a crown from them, placing it on the head of Hierarch Jesus, to deliver the messages from God, proclaiming:
