Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

The men with red hair surveyed their surroundings, and they received the command, "Explore the land." This aligns with the declaration, "I will bring vengeance upon Edom." By instructing them to "search the land," the prophet signals to the Israelites that the moment has arrived for retribution against their adversaries, including the Idumeans and various other nations.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

When referring to "earth," he is indicating the entirety of creation rather than just the territory of Israel. He describes the horses as diverse in color, as they fulfill various roles, administering discipline when appropriate and bestowing blessings when required.
