Theodoret of Cyrus

Why did Samuel, after anointing Saul and receiving the divine confirmation regarding Saul’s kingship, instruct the tribes to draw lots? Those who lived in moral corruption disregarded the words of the Lord’s prophets. To prevent any assumption that the selection resulted from human favor, Samuel directed the casting of lots. When the lot indicated the tribe of Benjamin, it further specified generations, families, and individual members, ultimately leading to Saul. Even as Saul sought to conceal himself—recognizing that the responsibilities were beyond his stature—God revealed him to the Prophet, and his selection was affirmed by the entire assembly.
