John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

His sons, who were wicked and deeply entrenched in vice, caused him sorrow through their actions and the reality that they could not claim the honor that had been given to him.

John addressed those who approached him, warning them, “think not to say within yourselves, ‘Our father is Abraham’” (Matt. 3:9); similarly, Paul asserted, “not all those Israelites who are of Israel, who are not carnal children, are children of God” (Rom. 9:6, 8). Tell me, what value did Samuel’s sons hold in the esteemed legacy of their father if they failed to embody his righteousness?

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

You place your faith in the bishop who conferred upon you the diaconate, believing him to be a righteous individual whose virtues can compensate for your misdeeds. As previously mentioned, neither a father suffers punishment for his son nor a son for his father. The soul that sins is the one that faces death (Ezekiel 18:4). This is reflected in the case of Samuel, whose sons lost sight of the reverence due to God. They pursued gain, accepted bribes, and rendered unjust judgments.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Why was Samuel not held accountable for the wrongdoings of his children? Their actions may have been unjust, but they were not inherently evil. They did not sever their marital bonds, nor did they bring shame upon the holy tabernacle through immoral acts, nor did they withhold sacred offerings, thus distorting the sacrificial law. History charges them only with corruption; however, this was unknown to the Prophet since he resided far from their location. Samuel lived in Armatham, while his sons were in Bathsheba.
