2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

The Lord has overshadowed the daughter of Zion in His anger, afflicting her and diminishing her once-glorious radiance. I shall overlook the footstool of His presence. This refers to His sacred temple, the location where the feet of the angel rested.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Here begins the second lament: “How will the Lord bring darkness upon the daughter of Zion in His fury, and bring low the glory of Israel from heaven to earth, and will not remember His footstool on the day of His anger?” This makes it clear that the divine David refers to the temple of God as His footstool when he states, “Bow down at the footstool of His foot” (Psalms 93:5). The Prophet compares the disaster to darkness, declaring that the city has been cast down from heavenly heights to the earth.
