John Chrysostom
"And when they had prayed, the place where they were gathered was shaken." This was a sign that they had been heard, and of God's visitation. "And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit." What does "filled" mean? It means that they were kindled by the Spirit, and this gift burned within them. "And they spoke the word of God with boldness." The Lord inclined Himself to their request and, by shaking the place, showed that He was present at their prayer. "And when they had prayed," he says, "the place was shaken." To hear that this happened precisely for this reason, listen to the prophet: "He looks upon the earth and makes it tremble" (Ps 103:32). And again: "At the face of the Lord the earth was moved, at the face of the God of Jacob" (Ps 113:7).

God does this both to inspire greater fear and to give the apostles courage after the former threats. He also disposes them toward greater boldness. It was then the beginning of the preaching, and therefore they needed a visible sign in order to be more assured. Later this never happened. Thus they received much consolation from prayer. Naturally they also ask for the grace of signs, because by nothing other than signs could they prove that Christ had risen. They asked not only for their own safety, but that they might not be put to shame, and might speak with boldness. The place was shaken, and this strengthened them still more. Such a thing is sometimes a sign of wrath, and sometimes of visitation and providence. Here it was wrath. At the saving Passion, the earthquake occurred wondrously and supernaturally. Then the whole earth was shaken. And the Savior Himself said: then "there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places" (Mt 24:7). Here, on the one hand, it was a sign of wrath against those Jews. On the other hand, it filled the apostles with the Spirit. See how the apostles also are filled with the Spirit after prayer: "and they were all filled," he says, "with the Holy Spirit."
