Cyrill of Alexandria
When God’s honor is compromised, showing mercy can actually be unsafe or even detrimental; this is not a moment for weak or indulgent compassion. In this regard, the Lord stated, ‘Whoever loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me’ (Matthew 10:37). Thus, let the principle of human sympathy fade away, and let the influence of natural affection and everything connected to humanity be set aside, so that through righteous severity, God may be glorified. Would it not be seen as a righteous act for those who engage in irredeemable apostasy to receive stringent punishment, given that they affront the supreme glory above all? Instead of carelessly dishonoring Him, it would be far better to strive towards honoring Him with resolute dedication.
