One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

They corrupted the natural order and devised an unnatural and illicit blend. As a result, God imposed upon them a remarkable form of judgment for their wickedness, impacting even the very depths of the earth, manifesting in the desolation of the land. This is evident today along the banks of the Dead Sea, the site of Sodom and Gomorrah, which faced divine destruction by fire, serving as a lasting testament for future generations. This serves as a warning against repeating their actions and incurring the same fate. Anyone who desires may journey to these locations and witness the land, starkly revealing the scars of the divine penalty: even after so many years, the manifestation of God's anger remains apparent, as if the judgment occurred just yesterday or this morning. Therefore, I urge you to derive wisdom from the fate of others, reflecting on the consequences that befell them.
