Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

The initial offering of the “fruits of the sun” that Moses wishes for Joseph, signifying the insight of the holy ones, symbolizes the first manifestation of the Divine. The product that the moon will yield represents creation.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Following these tribes, he bestows a blessing upon Joseph and proclaims a shared blessing for both tribes. This blessing encompasses the Lord’s favor on his territory, the splendor of the heavens, the nourishment of the dew, and the depths of the springs below. It includes the fruits brought forth by the sun, the culmination of the months, the heights of the mountains at their inception, and the peaks of the hills of eternity. He entreats for the heavenly gifts and the produce of the earth, which are sustained by the rains, invigorated by the dews, and matured by the sun through the cycles of the seasons and months. These abundant fruits emerge not only from the flatlands, but also from the lofty mountains.
