Gaiety often results in a lapse of memory. However, dear ones, as you gather for a meal, remember that following your dining, it is essential to engage in prayer. Eat in moderation so that when you feel weighed down, you will still have the strength to kneel and communicate with God. Consider how the animals from the stable travel the roads, carrying burdens and fulfilling their duties. Yet, after a meal, you find yourselves unable to labor; would that not make you lower than the donkeys themselves? This is because the time after eating is meant for gratitude, and one who offers thanks should remain sober, attentive, and awake. Let us not shift from the table to rest but rather to prayer, ensuring we do not become more foolish than those who cannot speak.

Ambrose of Milan

When you postpone honoring your commitment, you are essentially not honoring it at all. A vow is an appeal for blessings from God, accompanied by a promise of gratitude expressed through giving something in return. Thus, once you receive what you requested, it becomes ungrateful to delay your response. However, some individuals may overlook their responsibilities, either due to carelessness, or out of pride and arrogance, believing that their fortunes stem solely from their own merits, failing to acknowledge the true Benefactor. Another form of sin, while lesser, is closely related to pride: some acknowledge God as the source of blessings but mistakenly think they deserve them based on their own wisdom and virtues.

They see themselves as deserving of divine grace and do not consider the possibility of being unworthy of God's favor. To prevent this mindset and ensure that your prayers are not seen as transgressions, the law instructs you through the words of the Lord who established it: "Take heed to yourself, lest you forget the favours of the Lord your God, and forget His commandments, and His statutes, and His righteousness, which today I command you. When you eat and are filled, and build good houses and dwell in them, and when you have many sheep and oxen, and have much silver and gold, and possess all things, and your bins are full, see that your heart does not fail, and that you do not forget the Lord your God" (Deuteronomy 8:11-14). You forget the Lord when you lose sight of your own identity: if you recognize your frailty and acknowledge that God is preeminent over all, you will remember to give Him the honor He is due.
