The book of Deuteronomy, which reiterates earlier doctrines, clearly demonstrates that salvation does not come through our deeds or righteousness but rather through God's grace. This is evident when the Lord, speaking through Moses, commands, “Search not thou in thine heart, when the Lord thy God shall consume these tongues before thy face, saying, For my righteousness’ sake hath the Lord led me in to inherit this good land.

Not for thy righteousness’ sake, nor for the righteousness of thy heart, but for the wickedness and iniquity of these tongues, will the Lord consume me from before thy face, and will establish the covenant by which the Lord swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." Take heed today that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is granting you this good land to possess, for you are a wicked people.
