God is described as a jealous deity. In Scripture, the people of Israel, along with the church, are frequently depicted as the bride of the Lord; thus, the God of the covenant is referred to as the bridegroom. This jealous God, driven by His deep love for the church, desires to see it remain pure and cannot permit it to pursue other gods or engage in detestable practices. It is noteworthy that in verse 13, the Hebrew term for grove, asherah, differs from the term found in verse 33 of chapter 21 in Genesis, where it states, “And Abraham planted a grove by Bathsheba.” In Genesis, this grove is identified as an eshel. Logically, it appears that the term asherah refers to a wooden pillar that was erected in groves in homage to Astarte, similar to how a stone pillar was dedicated to Baal. In 2 Samuel 14:23, it is mentioned that the men of the kingdom of Judah established an asherah under a large shady tree.
