2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

I will lay My hand upon him, and he shall be led away, taken to Babylon where he will not perceive his surroundings; they will blind him. This refers to Zedekiah, who will be captured and placed in chains by those who seize him, ultimately losing his sight, and he will be unable to behold the land where he lived.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

I will lead him to Babylon, to the land of the Chaldeans, where he will not behold it, and there he shall perish. Through these events, it was made evident that God would employ adversaries as tools to discipline the king, the leaders, and all his people for their iniquities. The Lord referred to the adversaries as His scourge and the siege as His inheritance. Both the fourth book of the kingdoms and the revered prophet Jeremiah speak openly regarding these matters. Nebuchadnezzar dispatched a cavalry into the wilderness of Jericho, capturing Zedekiah and those who had fled with him. They were taken to Devlath, where Nebuchadnezzar first executed Zedekiah's children before forcing him to witness their deaths. He then blinded Zedekiah, shackled him with bronze, and brought him to Babylon to reside in the house of the millstone. Thus, the prophecy indicates that he will be carried off to Babylon and will not witness it.
