The Church Fathers on this verse

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

You unjustly wound the heart of the righteous. Your predictions and sorceries strike at the heart of the simple, leading to suffering similar to that which Jeremiah endured when he was thrown into the pit (Jeremiah 38:6). Through your deception, you burden the hearts of the righteous, who are not caught in turmoil with Me. I allow hardships to befall those among My people who have sinned, but not upon those who mourn for the iniquities of My people.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

As you have caused distress and upheaval to the righteous by predicting their trials while emboldening the wicked with promises of good, you have acted against my purpose. Therefore, I will bring you to complete ruin for your actions, I will terminate your deceitful enchantments, and I will rescue my people from the devastation you have planned. After proclaiming this, the Prophet shifts his focus to a different matter.
