Ephraem the Syrian

Look, I am over you all... I will strip away your strength, leading you into captivity. And I will release the souls you have ensnared through your spells and illusions.

Jerome of Stridon

Thus, the gracious and compassionate God does not bring destruction upon the prophetesses themselves but rather rends their bindings, which ensnare the soaring souls like nets, allowing these souls to ascend freely when released. They will tear away the veils or coverings that signify the soul's supreme authority, with which the deceived were shrouded. The apostle instructs us (2 Cor. 3:18) that the heads of humanity ought not to be concealed but should behold the glory of the Lord with unveiled faces. For, as he points out, you have shattered the spirits of those who worship God through misguided fear and have confined the wicked with empty promises, preventing them from attaining the life they have forfeited through repentance.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The Lord declares that He will challenge your statements, demonstrating their untruth. Instead of the comforting assurances you provide, which are akin to soft cushions, He will bring misfortunes upon those who trust in you, causing them to face a reality that reveals your deceptions. Yet, through their trials, He will rescue them from your deceit, guiding them to ignore your words and to recognize Him as their Lord and Sovereign.
