Theodoret of Cyrus
The prophet will be victorious and proclaim the word, for I, the Lord, will prevail against that prophet. I will extend My hand against him and remove him from among the people of Israel. They shall bear their iniquities. It is not the role of the Just Judge to tempt the prophet or to punish the seduced. Thus, God addresses the fact not of the prophet's actual temptation but of permitting him to be led astray. While I could swiftly denounce his falsehoods, I choose to hold back, allowing him the freedom to succumb to temptation, as his choices stem from his own volition rather than compulsion.

Consequently, He threatens equal retribution for the one who queries and the one who responds, declaring that the punishment shall match the iniquities of both the asker and the answerer and that the same shall apply to the Prophet. This is to ensure that the house of Israel does not become defiled in relation to Me or through their transgressions. They will be My people, and I will be their God, says the Lord Adonai. I will not impose this punishment without purpose, but through their downfall, I will support My people and rescue them from wickedness. For I long for this people to be My own, and I yearn to be their God, caring deeply for them.
