Theodoret of Cyrus
This was realized during the period of exile; however, God illustrated it symbolically, comparing it to an unfaithful spouse who faces stoning, death, and burning. Therefore, maintaining this symbolism, He further states, And in thee shall vengeance be executed before many spouses. He does not refer to spouses as such, but uses the term for the cities metaphorically; for He presents the city of Jerusalem in the form of a woman at the time of judgment. This reveals the purpose behind the punishment. And I will turn you away from idolatry, and you shall not seek any man.

When you have lost your prosperity and have been taken into captivity, then you will have nothing to offer in exchange for this meager payment; instead, you will endure a time of scarcity that will ultimately be restored to you.
